Are your compost facility operators adequately trained for their work?
Since 2007, Dr. John Paul has offered an intensive 3-day training course for compost facility operators. This course is now taught in conjunction with SWANA and the Composting Council of Canada.
The course provides a comprehensive understanding of the operational and technical, chemical and physical, environmental, economic and business, and social and legal issues related to large-scale composting of organic material. The course is hands-on training programs with practical exercises and a field trip.
This course is for compost facility operators, compost facility managers, regulators of compost facilities, community staff interested in organic waste diversion and composting, and all others who are interested in the fascinating world of large scale composting.
The accompanying manual is included in the course fee, and will be also available from us, or through JG Press, the great people that publish the Biocylce magazine.
The course is taught by Dr. John Paul.
John has been specializing in composting and organic waste management for more than 20 years. John has a thorough knowledge of the Canadian and international compost industry, and he combines solid academic competence with hands-on experience from numerous successful projects and roots in the agricultural industry.

Hilights from the course (from course evaluation): "interacting with others involved with composting (private, public operators and regulators)"..."class participations and discussions"..."very helpful to understand the scientific side of composting"..."making our own compost batches"..."very well taught, making it easy to understand"..."great food"
We are now also using another innovative learning tool in the Compost Facility Operator Course to assist in the hands-on learning!
Next Compost Facility Operator Course date is March 29-31, 2017 at the Old Clayburn Village School in Abbotsford, BC
The course fully complies with the personnel training plans required by the Organic Matter Recycling Regulation (OMRR) in British Columbia and covers all topics (and more) in the OMRR compost facility requirement guidelines.
SWANA members can apply for 15 Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) when they have completed the training program. Please contact Alda Nicmans at email@example.com for more details.
There is also an opportunity to take the exam as part of the Compost Council of Canada National Compost Operator Certification Program. Visit www.compost.org for more details.
